Ice is slippery, yes, but skates are NOT

I've finally figured out why I find ice skating so slippery. Particularly when I try to skate quickly, and push hard only to find the skate slipping all over the place. And get cramps in my toes -.-

That is because today I found out that Fuji Ice Palace's rental skates are not sharpened.

Yes, not sharpened.

I know they say one should be able to tell when a pair of skates is unsharpened, but if, like me, you've only ever worn unsharpened skates, you'd never know, would you?

I was wondering how their boots managed to survive to such grand old ages when their blades should have been sharpened down to nothing a long time ago. So I looked at the bottom of the blades after I took my skates off and got a shock.

Now I know why ice skating is so unpopular here. Imagine you're good at inline skating, but when you try so darn hard not to fall when you're ice skating and the only thing your skates do is to slip right out under you, over and over again, and cause you to land hard on your derriere, you're going to think twice about liking ice skating. Let alone forking out about $13 for 2 hrs.

If I'm not mistaken, Kallang Leisure Park Ice Skating Rink actually sharpens their nice, comfy, padded rental skates, as compared to Fuji's hard, old, stinky and painful and unsharpened ones. Not to mention RUSTING ones.

Looks like I'll be making the extra distance down to Kallang instead. It'll cost me more time and the entry fee is more expensive, but if their skates are sharpened, I guess it's worth the trip.

-.-

To all future ice rink owners- sharpen the darn blades, for ice skating's sake.
